Solar Power Systems – Can There Be Solar Panel Energy for Renters?
You understand the benefits of switching from traditional utility power to home solar power. You care about the environment, want to reduce your personal carbon footprint, and would even like to save money. Living off grid is very appealing to you. One problem. You are an apartment dweller. Do you have any options?
Below are three ideas to help you realize your dream of home solar power:
1) You could invest in portable solar panels or a small portable solar power system. Portable solar panels or your portable solar power system could be used for your small appliances. If you happen to be fortunate enough to have a patio, a deck, or even a balcony that gets plenty of sunlight during the daytime, a portable solar charger might be an option. Your portable solar charger will collect sunlight, and then store enough so that you could charge such things as your laptop, or maybe power your TV. On the downside, the portable solar chargers provide only an hour or so of use. Their cost is not yet cheaper than powering your laptop or TV off the grid, but could be a great backup source should you live in a place that frequently has power outages. They can also be a fantastic way of keeping your rechargeable batteries full of charge.
2) A second option is to talk your landlord or owner into installing a solar panel system for your complex. If you try this approach you may first want to gather some like minded neighbors and work out a presentation. This is obviously easier if you live in an area where solar power systems are popular and used. For your presentation, gather some data from your local electric company, and check out to see if they buy back energy from those using solar panel energy. You will then have an incentive for your landlord if you could prove that they might save money with a solar power system. You could also research what local and state tax credits might be available for solar power systems. Are there any other complexes locally that are using solar power systems? If so, approach their landlord to ask how they use this to their advantage in marketing to future renters. The goal here is to show that by implementing solar panel energy, your landlord will save money on utilities and fill up his apartments due to the fact that renters would prefer to have apartments that are energy efficient. With a little time spent on research, you will be able to give a presentation that shows your landlord that installing a solar power system is an excellent business decision.
3) Your third option is to seek out apartment complexes that are already utilizing a solar power system. It might surprise you to find out that these types of communities are already in your town, communities that are ahead of the trend of using solar panel energy. Of course for those living in the “Sunbelt” area of the United States, a college town that is more progressive or if your state is one that offers tax benefits for solar power systems, this will be a much easier find.
If you find that you cannot live your off grid dream at the moment, do not despair. The demand for solar panel energy technology is causing rapid developments in solar panel technology around the world. What this means is, lower priced solar panel technology of even higher quality than today, is just around the corner!
Until Next time,
Let the sunshine in!

This is so interesting. Thank you for making me realize that I don’t have to wait till I have my own house before I start using solar energy. We are renting a house (in Poland – where we live people don’t move around much and we are not planning to stay in the town where we are much longer, so we have to rent). We just had almost 2 weeks of perfect, sunny weather. So much energy was wasted (muda!) that we could use!
