Solar Panels for Home Solar Power: How Do They Work?

When it comes to solar panels, there are basically two different kinds that can be used for home solar power. One kind generates electricity, and the other kind creates heat. Before beginning your project it is important to know which of these two types of solar panels you will need, based on the job you have in mind. The reason for this is that the solar panels are not interchangeable. Although they are not interchangeable, both types of solar panels are able to save you money.

The first type of solar panels used for home solar power are those that generate heat. These solar panels are solar thermal collectors. How they function is that they use the sun’s energy to heat water and other fluids such as oil. These liquids are commonly housed in plastic tubing, hoses or coils inside the panel. The liquid that runs through the coils is heated by the sun. Swimming pools, spas, hot tubs and hot water for homes and businesses are ideal uses for these types of solar panels. Solar thermal collectors can also be used to heat building interiors when installed like baseboard heating units and hot water flooring systems. Once the systems are installed, there is typically no need for additional heating fuels, although they usually require some kind of motorized pump to circulate the fluids.

The other type of solar panels used for home solar power are solar photovoltaic cells, which create DC (direct current) electricity. What is most often used is semi-conductor material such as silicon in the panel, which then interacts with sunlight to create electricity. This electricity can then be used to power computers and appliances, or even an entire house, if the system is built large enough. The electricity from these solar panels for home solar power is generated only during the day as they are interacting with direct sunlight.

When maximizing home solar power, how do you use these solar panels at night, if the electricity is generated only during sunlight hours? In order to use a photovoltaic system at night or during cloudy days, the electricity must be stored in a battery storage system. There are two types of battery options. One is an inexpensive lead-acid battery such as what you use in your car. If you decide to go this route, you will need to be sure that it is filled with distilled water in order for it to maintain it’s charge. There are also more expensive batteries such as sealed AGM (absorbant glass mat) batteries that don’t require maintenance in order to retain their charge. Another option are gel batteries, which are excellent choices for cold climates due to their freeze resistance properties.

Both the solar thermal collector and the solar photovoltaic systems will most likely use glass panels to enclose their collection systems. Both systems also require access to direct sunlight. The ideal location for the panels to be located would be one that faces the south, and also one that allows the maximum exposure to sunlight during daylight hours.

Although they can be used anywhere to harness the sun’s energy, they are not as effective in regions that have a lot of cloudy days throughout the year. For those living in sunny regions, it is always best to have a backup generator to both kinds of solar panel system for your home solar power. In order to maintain your green lifestyle, your backup generators can be fueled with biodiesel. Should you have a long stretch of cloudy days, or your battery storage fails, you will have your backup generator there to use as well.

I am having difficulty getting any response from companies in the US, England and China have responded, I am looking for solar panels and inverts for all of our house for pool pumps.
