If you are like most people, you are looking to build solar panels because your utility bills have been getting more expensive every month, with no intention of going down. Because of this you have considered installing solar panels for home solar power. You are handy with a screwdriver, and wonder, would it really be too difficult to build solar panels, and thus have your own home solar power? If this is something you have wondered, continue reading in order that you may make an educated decision.
Before going further, we need to clarify that we are discussing how to build solar panels that deliver will electricity for lighting, appliances, etc; versus solar energy that will heat your water, but will not produce electricity.
One of the first things to learn about is photovoltaic arrays. Photovoltaic arrays are the most popular solar panel designed to generate electricity, because they have the ability to convert direct sunlight into electricity. The incredible thing is that this electricity can even be stored!
How do you begin to build solar panels? As you delve into building your own solar panels for home solar power, you will discover that you can build solar panels with a solar panel kit, or you can build them from scratch. The first and most practical way is with solar panel kits. Solar panel kits are straight forward, requiring basic handy-man skills. The second type of DIY (do it yourself) solar panels are solar panels that are built from the ground up. In other words, from scratch. When they are built from scratch they can be a bit more challenging, therefore they are probably best left to those who are more adventurous, have the time and ability to experiment, or, have the right guide to direct them. One of their benefits, however, is that they can be a great deal cheaper than some of the other do-it-yourself kits.
DIY Solar Panel Kits:
DIY solar panel kits can be purchased from various online or local supplies. If you use the internet do a search for “solar cell kits”. There you will find numerousf websites that offer online videos, DVD, or books of plans and directions. Some of the kits even include the materials you need, or at least tell you how you may obtain them at the best price.
The items typically included or involved in a kit are:
- photovoltaic cells
- the wiring
- the assembly hardware
- the mounting devices
Using a do-it-yourself kit, otherwise known as a DIY solar kit, would be similar to putting together any other do it yourself item such as a doll house or computer desk kit that you purchased from a hardware store or other retailer. Before beginning your solar panel building project for home solar power, you should probably check into your local building codes to see if any permits are required, and also to see if you must use an installer who is licensed.
Build Solar Panels From Scratch:
If you choose to build your solar panel cells from scratch, you might find it to be much less expensive, but more labor intensive than the DIY solar kits. A lot of this depends on the type of directions you follow, and how involved you want your solar panel system to be.
Items needed would be:
- Some type of raw copper sheeting – similar to copper flashing found at a hardware store.
- A heat source
- Non-oxidized copper panel of similar size
- Salt water solution
- Shatterproof glass panel
- Wiring
- Mounting components
The first thing you want to do is to heat your copper sheeting for half an hour, or however long is required for chemical oxide to form on the sheet’s surface. After this point the copper panel would be cooled, and then combined with your non-oxidized copper panel. Next the salt water solution is added, and then the components are encased in the glass panel.
After the panel has been assembled, the mounting components and wiring are added. What you have now is a solar panel with low voltage. In order to have enough electricity to operate your household appliances, you will need to make a lot of these cells in order to have a large enough panel.
As you can see, it is possible to build solar panels for home solar power. The most crucial things needed are the right tools, the right instructions, and the time necessary to put them together.

Solar energy houses can be totaly independent from the utlity companies. But it is still expensive and the efficiency not that great either. However research is getting more advanced and they are starting to focus on effiency and cost will drop
Thanks for posting about this issue. I sneaked a quick peak at your website and I found it very fascinating, very useful.
